Our President Mr FR. Hunter was unfortunately unable to be present & and represented in his son Mr A L R Hunter of Horbury.
The Show was officially opened by the Mayor of Wakefield Cr. C Sutcliffe who was accompanied by The Mayoress Mrs Sutcliffe & the Deputy Mayor & Mayoress. The Mayor who had returned from Brighton earlier in the day was highly impressed by the display of the unusual and unique flowers & praised the exhibitors for their skill in bringing them to perfection in spite of the unfortunate weather. He recalled visits to the Wakefield & North of England Tulip
Society 40 years ago. As chairman of the Parks committee he spoke of the need opportunities in horticulture for young men & women to make a career of horticulture in the Wakefield Parks. A vote of thanks to the Mayor & Mayoral Party was proposed by the
Chairman Mr J Akers & seconded by the Secretary.
The Show as a whole was very successful, all classes being well represented. A very encouraging feature was the increasing number of entries in the Novice Class.
All these are new members & among them must be the Champions of the future.
