Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from
Messrs W. Guest, J. Fisher, J. Ward, C. Heptinstall & Mrs Townsend.
The minutes of the meeting held 29th April & an emergency meeting later in the week were read & confirmed. There were no matters arising.
A letter was read from the Urban District Council of Normanton, congratulating Mr J Taylor for his successes at the 1969 show & sending their best wishes for the future of the Society.
Letters were received from Mr H. Parry Moore, our member in Kent, enclosing subscription of 5/- & donation of £1-0-0, & from Mr R Ince of Crofton, now working for Cheshire County Council, enclosing subscription of 10/-.
Also from Mr T. Coxhall, Lintra, 239 Coggleshall Road, Braintree Essex, wishing to buy bulbs of old English Tulips, applying for membership & enclosing a subscription of 5/-.
All these & other correspondence since the last meeting had been attended to by the secretary & this was approved.
A letter was read from P. de Jager & Sons (London) Ltd. The Nursery, Marden, Kent, stating their interest in purchasing stocks of old tulips, preferably over 100 years old, & asking if any were available through our Society.
This matter was discussed & Mr A. Tear announced that he was offering to members of the Society old English tulips at 45/- a 100, in 25 named varieties. & when members had received what they requested, his remaining surplus stocks of bulbs would be offered to de Jagers.
It was agreed that the Secretary should write to de Jagers explaining the situation.
Show reports. The secretary reported that the two 1969 shows, despite certain difficulties, had proved very successful. Entries were at least 25% up on the previous year & one of the Judges, Mr N.H. Eyre declared the blooms to be in prime condition. It was gratifying that everybody had worked hard towards its success.
A financial statement showed a net loss of £2-15-1 on the early show & a net loss of £2-6-0 on the Annual Show, which under the circumstances was considered satisfactory. Thanks was expressed to th Mr & Mrs Gibson for their help & co-operation & for providing teas which were equivalent to a donation of £2-0-6.
Bulb catalogues from Parkers, Bloms & de Jagers were examined by members.
It was not necessary for the Secretary to order bulbs from these sources as those belonging to the Belle Vue & Sandal Allotment Association would be ordering through their Society & others would be ordering privately. Members would be placing orders for old English tulips with
Mr Tear, which he would bring to the meeting in October.
A raffle for a table cloth donated by Mr S. Knowles (unclaimed at Annual Show raffle) & chocolates donated by Mr J Hardman realised 15/-
